Writing the Research Paper (or Proposal)
Literature Review
You’ve been to the library, read articles and books about your topic. In a research paper, you must now synthesize the key ideas of your literature review as it pertains to your research question. In other words, what ideas and findings from other studies were most useful in framing your research question, argument, hypothesis and findings? This section should not simply summarize the articles/books you read one by one. The key here is to link past research to your project!
Use this checklist to see if your literature review accomplishes these goals:
- What have others said about your topic and research question?
- How does their research inform your research question?
- Are you able to state a hypothesis based upon this past research?
- Does this past research help you interpret your analysis?
