Building Theories: Inductive Reasoning
Have you ever experienced an event firsthand and then used that to come up with some larger explanation about society? If so, then you understand the principles of inductive reasoning.
Ideally, we begin the process of data collection without set assumptions or expectations. We then examine our observations to develop empirical generalizations about the larger society. In other words, our research is used as the foundation for explanations or frameworks– this is how we build our theories.
