What are the types of variables?
The type of statistic you will compute will depend on a variable's Level of Measurement and what type of coding is used.
There are four types of levels of measurement:
Nominal: A variable whose units have no order. These variables are almost always organized as discrete categories. Examples are race, religion, colors, and gender.
Ordinal: A variable whose units have an order, but whose units have no real value attached to them. Examples are scales, rank-ordered categories.
Interval-Ratio: These variables may use one of two types of coding:
- Discrete: Any variable whose units cannot be subdivided.
- Continuous: Any variables whose units can be sub-divided
