Visual Methods

Contemporary visual sociologists images as data in three primary ways: subject produced; researcher created; or preexisting. Images (drawings, videos, photographs, etc.) may be made by the research subjects, made by the researcher either about the subjects or to show the subjects, or already exist in a visual archive somewhere, like the Library of Congress. Each of these categories of images can be subjected to qualitative analysis and/or may be used to facilitate open-ended interviewing called photo-elicitation. We will discuss each of these types of images and their uses within qualitative research in turn.

  1. Subject produced images
  2. Researcher created images
  3. Preexisiting images
  4. Photo elicitation
  5. Sampling Images
