Foreign Graduate Students
Dear Prospective Graduate Student
Thank you for your interest in our graduate program leading to the M.A. degree in Sociology. We take great pride
in our program, our internationally acclaimed faculty, and our Masters Degree recipients. Our former students are counted among those who
have received or are pursuing Ph.D. degrees or have achieved recognition in research, service, educational and business settings.
Attached at this WEB site, you will find several items for your attention and future action. The Graduate Handbook for the Department of Sociology outlines the requirements, courses, and policies and procedures of our graduate program and describes the credentials and interests of our faculty. There is a University of Houston Graduate Admission Application Booklet for International Students that you are required to complete. Also, for international students, there is a list of "Requirements for International Graduate Applicants" that is enclosed. Among other items, there is the requirement of TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) for applicants who did not graduate from native English-speaking countries. An application for financial assistance is supplied if you wish to seek a TA or RA (described in the booklet) position. Finally, there is a flier that offers additional information about our department that we ask you to share with others.
If you choose to apply for a TA or RA position, you should obtain two letters of recommendation. Please note: because you are an international applicant for admission to our program, you should send the completed application form, the GRE, and all other documents noted in the "Requirements for International Graduate Applicant" to the
Office of International Admissions,
University of Houston,
125 E Cullen, 77204-2023.
If you enter the UH System code (#6870) on the GRE, your scores will be automatically forwarded to us. If you choose to apply for a Teaching or Research Assistantship, please return this application to the Department of Sociology (see address on this letter) and not to the Office of International Admissions.
Please note that the deadlines for applying to our program are April 7 (for Summer), August 1 (for Fall), and
December 1 (for Spring). Also, the deadline for applying for financial assistance for the Fall is June 1.
If you have any questions about our graduate program, please feel free to contact me here at the department of Sociology. If you would like to meet with me personally, call me to set up a meeting at your convenience.
