finding grants and fellowships: an introduction for graduate students

You can’t get involved with grants and fellowships too early. It’s an essential part of academia today, and that won’t change anytime soon. For the rest of your career, you will be expected to solicit external funding for research, travel, and leave time. As you go along, if you have any questions, talk to your advisor or other faculty who have grants experience.

In addition, I’m always happy to help. Give me a call or drop me an e-mail.

getting started: pre-award research/funding opportunities

community of science

UH subscribes to the most comprehensive database of funding opportunities in all fields, Community of Science. Don’t let the name fool you — it’s not just for scientists. It has an excellent search mechanism: keywords, fields of study, activity location, and many others. In addition, COS allows you to create a username and password and profile. Doing so will enable you to access the database from any computer — at home, while traveling, etc. It’s an excellent resource that will let you target your funding searches. Even thirty minutes of browsing will give you a good idea of what funding opportunities are available.

See www.cos.com or go directly to the search page: http://fundingopps.cos.com/.

Also visit the CLASS grants home page and browse the CLASS Guide to Grants and Fellowships for Graduate Students, which contains grants, fellowships, and scholarship specifically targeted to graduate students in the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

state resources

One of the best places to look for funding from local governments, which often offer grants to help scholars with their work. You can search for them on Community of Science or find them online with a regular Google search.

international resources

State governments offer opportunities for you to do research, and so do other countries. If your research takes you overseas, check what funding might be available from that country. In addition, Fulbright Fellowships are offered to many countries in a variety of disciplines. It’s easy to do a Community of Science search to find out what grants are out there.
