Last night Brother Dr. William C. "Bill" Moffit passed away. Dr.Moffit was awarded the Kappa Kappa Psi Distinguised Service to Music Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the fraternity, during the 1971-73 biennium. He served as the Director of the Cougar Marching Band at the University of Houston for many years and was a prolific composer and arranger, most well known for his Olympic Fanfare and Sound Power Series. I've been lucky enough to meet Dr. Moffit several times of the past 5 years, most notably at his home in Jacksonville on the way back from the national convention this summer. On each occasion, he was cheerful and upbeat and his unique wit always made for an enjoyable conversation. The lives touched by Dr. Moffit are impossible to count, his music has been present at so many occasions that have touched so many. Today the Beta Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi is in mourning, as are the University of Houston, its band program, and the band community as a whole. In my recollection, Dr. Moffit wouldn't have wanted anyone to be sad at this loss, but rather to celebrate his contribution to band and to music. So, the next time that you play The Horse or any other piece written or arranged by Dr. William Moffit take a moment to remember his contribution to this thing that we all love so much.
