Course Requirements for French Majors
For students graduating
under the 2003-2004 catalogue, 27 advanced semester hours
(3000 and 4000 level) must be taken for the B.A. degree..
- FREN 1501, 1502, 2301 and 2302,
by course or by placement. These lower division courses do not
actually count toward the major, which begins with advanced
courses. (Advanced courses means junior and senior level courses,
numbered 3300-4300.)
- FREN 3312 (Oral Communication),
3313 (Advanced Grammar and Composition), and 3320 (Reading French
Texts). These courses are prerequisite for most other advanced
courses.
- 4301 (Survey of French Literature
I) and FREN 4302 (Survey of French Literature II).
- Note: FREN 4301 and 4302
may fulfill the core requirement.
- Six semester hours from the following:
FREN 3311 (French Phonetics), 3316 (Survey of French Culture
and Civilization), 3317 (Business French), 3318 (History of
French Cinema), 3330 (Scientific, Technological and Legal French),
4313 (Stylistics), and 4315 (Advanced Translation), 4317 (Advanced
Business French).
- Six further hours of advanced
French electives, of which three must be a literature course
at the 4000 level.
- In addition, credit for a second
year of another foreign language. For most students,
this means elementary (generally 10 credits) and intermediate
(generally 6 credits). Exceptions are made only upon approved
petition outlining a reasonable substitution.
