THE UGO DI PORTANOVA SCHOLARSHIP

The Ugo di Portanova Scholarship was funded by Ugo di Portanova in 1989. It consists of a yearly donation of $15.000 to be distributed among six students enrolled in the Program of Italian Studies at the University of Houston or among graduate students whose graduate work involves aspects of Italian culture and who may benefit of study and research time in Italy. For the students enrolled in the Italian Program of the UH, the Ugo Di Portanova Scholarship provides a month of summer study in Italy at the Università per Stranieri (State University for Foreign Students) in Siena, Italy.

The students may obtain the scholarship through a competition held each spring at the University of Houston. To participate in the competition the students should write a letter in Italian explaining the reasons for their interest in the scholarship and meet with the Selection Committee for a brief interview. The Selection Committee is formed by prominent members of the Italian community in Houston and is chaired by the director of Italian Studies. The winners are selected on the basis of their proficiency in Italian, their interest in Italian culture and the likely benefits they will receive from a sojourn in Italy.
