The Business French two course sequence:
Fall Semester:
- FREN 3317: Business French Cr. 3.(3-0). Prerequisite: FREN 3313 or equivalent, or consent of
instructor. Taught in French.
In this course, students- Learn French business terminology needed to:
- read and write a business letter, read a basic sales contract or a basic insurance policy
- write a resume
- understand basic commercial and banking transactions
- Become familiar with the corporate culture of France and the E.U.:
- learn about French modes of address, corporate hierarchy, business etiquette
- Be able to read business articles in the non-specialized press and online publications
- understand the structure and legal status of French companies
- Learn French business terminology needed to:

Spring Semester:
- FREN 4317: Advanced Business French Cr. 3.(3-0). Prerequisite: FREN 3317 or equivalent, or
consent of instructor. Taught in French.
In this course, students learn to:- Read business documents (contracts, articles in specialized media) and provide analyses and opinions.
- Write business letters.
- Write documents such as invoices, bills, orders.
- understand a simple balance sheet.
- Understand basic French banking rules and regulations.
- have a limited knowledge of French law as it relates to labor and corporate practices.
- Interact within a French corporate setting.
- Understand and discuss issues pertaining to the role of the French business community in the global market.
ONE of two French Culture and Society courses. Note: These courses will replace the former FREN 3316, Survey of French Culture and Civilization
- FREN 3397: French Culture and Society to 1945. Prerequisite: FREN 3313 or consent of instructor
- Major aspects of French History, from the Middle Ages to WW2, which have shaped modern French society and culture. Survey of French art, architecture, literature.
OR
- FREN 3397: Contemporary French Culture and Society. Prerequisite: FREN 3313 or consent of instructor.
- The French institutions of the 5th Republic, social and cultural issues in France (immigration, religion, labor movements, the French family, women’s rights, gay rights), France within the European Union, the French-speaking world and the meaning of “Francophonie” in the global market.
