ADVERBS

In this hand-out you will find:

• What are adverbs?
• -mente ending
• Adverbs categories

• Adverbs are words that modify verbs, adjectives, or another adverbs. In English, they are easy to recognize because they end in -ly. For example,

• Adverbs are inflexible so they do not agree in gender nor number.

• In Spanish, the equivalency of -ly is -mente. This ending is added to the feminine form of any adjective.

• Adjectives ending in -e need no change before adding -mente.

• Simirarly, adjectives ending in a consonant need no change.

•  As in English, adverbs can also be formed by using con (with) plus a noun

• There are adverbs which do not end in -mente.

• The adverb recientemente becomes recién before a past participle.

            *Please note: muy is never used alone. If needed alone, you must substitute it for mucho.
