The postion of nicht is determined by various elements in the sentence.

Nicht always follows:

• the finite verb (Sarah arbeitet nicht.)
• nouns used as direct and indirect objects (Sie macht ihre Hausaufgaben nicht.)
• pronouns used as direct and indirect objects (Ich kann es nicht.)
• specific adverbs of time (Warum studiert er heute nicht?)

Nicht preceeds most other kinds of elements:

• predicate nouns (Anton ist nicht mein Mitarbeiter.)
• predicate adjectives (Sie ist nicht nett.)
• adverbs (Ich studiere nicht gern mit ihm zusammen.)
• general time adverbs (Ich sehe ihn nicht oft.)
• prepositional phrases (Ich gehe nicht zur Schule.)
• separable prefixes (Sie kommt auch nicht vorbei.)
• infinitives (Ich kann ihr nicht helfen.)
• past participles (Warum ist sie nicht zurückgekommen?)

*Note: If several of the above elements occur in a sentance, nicht usually precedes the 1st one.
