REREAD Semonides, The Types of Women (with notes)
REREAD  Euripides, Hecuba

Understand the representation of the Thracians in Euripides' play and be able to interpret the striking transformations of Hecuba and Eurystheus at the end.

Know the following mythic characters:

Penelope, Alcestis, Medea, Clytemnestra, Phaedra, Scylla, Medusa.  Man-killers: the Danaids, the Lemnian women.

Be aware, in general terms, of the situation of women in Athens and in Sparta (T. Martin, Overview of Greek History, 5.15, 5.27-28, 6.12.
