New Scholarships

The Chinese Studies program would like to announce the creation of two new scholarships intended for undergraduates, to be awarded through the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The scholarships are intended for students focusing on East Asia or South Asia in the areas of language, culture, or history. Each scholarship will be $500. More details of the scholarships will be announced as they are available. Applications will start in January 2008, with the first scholarships taking effect for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Sino-USA Friendship Award

The Award is given to students who excel in Chinese language courses at UH. It is sponsored annually by the Education Section of the Consulate General of PRC in Houston. Students who are currently taking Chinese language and culture courses offered by the China program are eligible to apply. Students should write a statement of application and submit it to the instructor of the course. The deadline for the application is April 1 each year.

The Chinese Ministry of Education Study Abroad Award

This is the most prestigious scholarships offered to American institutions through the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Consulate Generals of PRC in Houston. The scholarship is intended to strengthen the educational exchanges and cooperation between China and United States. It provides a full scholarship to study in China for one year or half a year. The scholarship recipient may choose any university in China.

The scholarship is highly competitive. It provides registration fee, tuition, fee for laboratory experiment, internship and learning materials. It also provides accommodation, monthly living allowance, and a one-off settlement subsidy. Furthermore, it covers outpatient medical service and insurance.

Students who major and minor in Chinese Studies are eligible to apply. The deadline to submit application is November. 20, 2009. Please submit your application to MCL department at 613AH or to your Chinese course instructor.

& The Beijing-UH Summer Study Abroad Scholarship

Both scholarships are largely merit-based. The scholarship amount is limited, and generally comparable between the two scholarships. The second scholarship is sponsored by the host university (BQZX) and will be given to the winners when arriving in Beijing. You may check both, but only one may be given.
