B.A. in Classical Studies: Requirements
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Studies at the University of Houston includes the following required credit hours in addition to the College's basic requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree. Classical Studies majors complete 33 hours in the program, of which 27 must be advanced.

1. 12 semester hours in Latin or ancient Greek at the 2000 level and above, or equivalent placement by examination.

2. 6 semester hours from survey courses taught in English. This includes CLAS 4381 Latin Classics in Translation and another CLAS course approved by the director.

3. 6 semester hours in ancient history, including HIST 3339, HIST 3340 and/or other courses approved by director.

4. 9 semester hours from approved Classical Studies electives, which include many courses in Art History, Classical Studies, English, History, Philosophy, and Political Science.

These same courses can be used to fulfill the general requirements of the Bachelor of Arts (for Core credit or the language requirement, for example). For information on honors theses, please click here.

NOTE: Majors in Classical Studies may choose either Latin or Greek to fulfill their language requirement. We recommend that students who are planning to do graduate studies, especially in Classics or in History, take three years of one of the classical languages and two years of the other. It is advisable to begin one language in the first year of the major, and wait to begin the study of the other language the following year.

The elementary year of foreign languages, including Latin or Greek, does not count toward the total number of hours in the degree. Thus GREK/LATN 1301-1302 count as general elective hours. Students may place out of the elementary year by examination. At the intermediate level and above, students may earn credit by taking the Placement Exam. These exams are administered by Classical Studies, not by Testing and Counseling. MODERN GREEK CREDITS (GREK 1305, 1306, 2305, 2306) CANNOT BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ANCIENT GREEK CREDITS. Modern Greek can be used for elective credit, however.
