Dr. Teresa McIntyre has developed her work in the field of Clinical and Health Psychology, in the U.S., Portugal and Europe. She has a diversified experience in teaching, research and practice in Health Psychology, with international recognition. She has had a leading role in the development of Health Psychology in Portugal, having pioneered the first master’s and doctoral programs in the country, and in Health Psychology in Europe as member of the Executive Committee and president of the European Health Psychology Society, where she is currently a honorary Fellow. Dr. McIntyre has been on the editorial board of Psychology & Health, Health Psychology Review and Brazilian Review of Health Psychology. She has directed numerous dissertations and her research has focused on the relationship between psychosocial factors and illness, health and health care. Her funded research encompasses four main areas of interest:
- Occupational stress in high risk professions (e.g. health professionals, teachers)
- Gender and age differences in psychosocial adjustment to chronic illness (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, pain, cancer),
- Testing theory-based health promotion programs in nutrition, exercise and HIV prevention in low income and multicultural populations,
- Post-traumatic stress in war veterans and war afflicted civilians.
Questions regarding diversity and health, as well as cross-cultural comparisons in response to illness and intervention (in countries such as Scotland, France, Angola and Mozambique), permeate this research.
