Resources for Majors
Honors Society
Sigma Tau Delta
The English Department is home to the Epsilon Phi chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the English honors society.
Honors in English
Students wishing to complete work on a senior honors thesis, and thus to graduate with "honors in English", should begin to arrange their honors project through the UH Honors College at (713) 743-9010 in the fall semester of their junior year.
Honors Day
The Department hosts an Honors Day each spring to celebrate the accomplishments of our students.
Professional Internships
The Department of English internship program is designed to give students practical experience that will be helpful in setting career goals and in securing positions after graduation. The program places students in a variety of settings, such as positions in publishing houses, law firms and courts, non-profit organizations, museums, and banks. English majors who have a junior or senior standing with a minimum gpa of 3.0 in the major can qualify for the internship program, and enroll in ENGL 4390. The course can be taken a second time for a total of 6 hours, which can be counted toward the degree requirements. The internship program is administered by Dr. Dorothy Baker, who can be reached for more information at 713-743-2972 or dzbaker@uh.edu.
Teaching Certification
Students who wish to teach English in secondary schools may be certified in English / Language Arts Composite. Certification is comprised of a bachelor's degree and a sequence of professional development coursework. The deadline for applications to the College of Education is October 1 (for Spring admission) and March 1 (for Fall admission). Please contact the English Undergraduate Advisor for more information.
