Lower Division Curriculum Committee Textbook Policy and Rationale

(Proposed Revision May 2010)

1303: All TAs and TFs should use the textbook approved by the LDCC as their primary text. The use of the handbook is optional; however, the instructor is responsible for providing material necessary to teach editing, mechanics, and rhetorically appropriate style.

1304: The TA or TF should use the textbook approved by the LDCC as their primary text the first semester that he or she teaches the course. After that, he or she can choose from a list of alternate texts approved by the Lower Division Curriculum Committee or can petition the Lower Division Curriculum Committee to use a text not on the list. In the petition, the TA or TF should show that the proposed textbook meets the goals set forth in the LDCC mission statement and the Exemplary Educational Objectives for the course. The use of a handbook is optional; however, the instructor is responsible for providing material necessary to teach editing, mechanics, and rhetorically appropriate style, and for providing instruction in appropriate, correct documentation styles, including MLA.

The selection of the approved texts is guided by the following criteria:

  1. The University of Houston Undergraduate Studies Catalog course descriptions
  2. The Department of English extended course descriptions
  3. The Core Communication Course Exemplary Educational Objectives
  4. Mission Statement
