John J. Antel is a Professor of Economics and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston. Professor Antel received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972. In 1983 he received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles. Before joining the University of Houston Economics Department in 1981, Dr. Antel worked as a labor and population studies consultant to the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, California. Dr. Antel served as Economics Department Chair at the University of Houston from 1997 to 2002. He served on the University of Houston Academic Senate Executive Committee from 1999 to 2002. Professor Antel continues to teach and do research in labor economics, health economics, and applied statistics at the University of Houston.

Sarah Fishman is a professor of history and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Professor Fishman received her bachelor’s degree in history from Oberlin College in 1979. In 1987, she received her Ph.D. in history from Harvard University. She teaches modern European history and French history with an emphasis on gender and society. She recently published her latest book, La France sous Vichy: Autour de Robert Paxton. Prior to joining the Dean’s office, she served as Undergraduate Director in the Department of History.
associate dean of graduate studies
Catherine Patterson is an associate professor of History and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies for the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Professor Patterson received her bachelor’s degree in history from the College of William and Mary in 1986 and her Ph.D. degree in history from the University of Chicago in 1994. She teaches early-modern British and European history. She has published Urban Patronage in Early Modern England: Corporate Boroughs, the Landed Elite, and the Crown in England, 1580-1640, as well as numerous articles. Prior to joining the Dean’s office, she served as Director of Graduate Studies for the History Department. She has also chaired the College’s Faculty Governance and Advisory Committee.
