SUGGESTIONS FOR THE SECOND SEMESTER: BIBLIOGRAPHY
On dictionaries You know enough Greek now to be able to consult a dictionary with a minimum of frustration. I will continue listing and linking new vocabulary to each lesson, with the required vocabulary marked. However, as the number of words used in the course increases, and the inevitable initial gaps in my listings become apparent, you may resort to one of these solutions: looking up a dictionary online, or buying a small dictionary. I list these resources separately for ancient and Biblical Greek, starting with the cheapest. The links take you to Barnes and Noble, because I found their prices the lowest, but you may also search for used copies at B&N, Amazon, and elsewhere. Ancient Greek Dictionaries: Langenscheidt's Pocket Classical Greek Dictionary. Minimal, but it can be used ($ 12.95). A Greek English Lexicon (Liddell and Scott) Sufficient for an undergraduate student of ancient Greek ($ 38). Yet for only a few extra dollars the next size is far more useful: An Internediate Greek-English Lexicon ($ 45) The large Liddell and Scott ($135) is a tool for scholars and advanced students. Online Liddell-Scott: Go to Perseus. You will need to follow the instructions in the Display, and then click on Tools. One of the options will be Greek Dictionary entry. In the window that opens with the Intermediate L-S entry you will find a link to the larger L-S. An extraordinary tool, though not terribly easy to use... Koinê Greek Dictionaries: Shorter Lexicon of the Greek New Testament (Gingrich) Abridgment and adaptation ot the most authoritative dictionary for koinê, the Greek-German Lexicon by Walter Bauer. ($ 30) Two larger editions, that someone who plans to do scholarly research in koinê may consider, are: A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, ($ 44). This edition includes only New Testament sources, to the exclusion of the Apostolic Fathers and other early Christian literature: A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (Walter Bauer, William Arndt, Frederick W. Danker, ed., University of Chicago Press 2000. ($ 68). More comprehensive than the above.
Online Koinê Greek Lexicon:
New Testament Greek Lexicon Requires downloading the BST Font. This Lexicon does not give citations but instead a translation and references to occurrences of a word in the NT. It may be easier to browse the KJV Lexicon at the same site, with the same limitations.
