A Final Note

Overshadowed by the Surrealist movement, the term Magical Realism is rarely used by French art critics (Guenther).  However, no one debates the far-reaching influence of Rousseau and his popularization of the Naïve style.  During a period when children's art and art of the mentally disabled received much attention from the most famous of the artistic societies, Rousseau combined an uninhibited connection to the subconscious with the gift of hand and eye.  Of course Rousseau tried his hand at many styles of painting, particularly after the Classicists style of Boguereau, but he fell under the spell of reality only.  Importantly, many of the Magical Realists' careers don't even begin until after Rousseau's death in 1910.  Therefore Rousseau stands in history as a precursor to the re-emerging of the object -- the New Magical Reality.
