The University of Houston's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders boasts an extraordinary externship program that may be the finest of its kind in a single metropolitan area. Our program offers a student extern a choice from among FORTY-SIX different sites, each of which is staffed by one or more well-qualified professionals who holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence as awarded by ASHA.

The sites are grouped as follows:
- Facilities, other than public schools, where school-age children are served.
- Facilities that specialize in service delivery to children in the birth to age-3 range. These are often referred to as sites that specialize in "early childhood intervention."
- Public school settings that involve eleven different districts in the greater Houston area, all of which are available during either the fall or spring term.
- Facilities that specialize in either the acute or long-term care of adult patients.
In addition to the facilities referred to above, it may be possible to arrange an externship for you at a site in some major city in Texas other than Houston (e.g. San Antonio, Dallas) or elsewhere in the U.S. Any such arrangement would need to be made well in advance of the semester in which you have planned to serve your externship.
