Phonetics is the scientific study of all aspects of speech (including those outside of language). It is divided into acoustic and articulatory phonetics. Acoustic phonetics is concerned with the structures and patterns of acoustic signals. Articulatory phonetics is concerned with the way sounds are produced. In addition, experimental phonetics, which combines the methods of phonetics with experimental psychology, aims to discover what kinds of representation underlie the perception and production of spoken language.
