What is Academic Notice?
If you are a Freshman who has earned less than 2.0 semester GPA (Below a C average) in your first semester of enrollment at UH and if you have earned less than 29 semester hours of total credit, you will be placed on Academic Notice.
This is not probation, and you CANNOT be suspended at this time.
Academic Notice applies only to your first semester. If you do not earn a cumulative GPA of 2.0 during your second semester, you will be placed on academic probation.
Students on Academic Notice must go to the University Studies Division for advising.
What is Academic Probation?
If your cumulative GPA falls below a 2.0 (and you are not a first-semester freshman with 29 hours or less) during your academic career, you will be placed on academic probation. This is a warning to get your act together!
While your cumulative GPA is below 2.0, you will remain on probation and you must continue to earn a semester GPA of 2.0 to avoid being placed on academic suspension.
NOTE 1: Mandatory academic advising is required for all students on academic probation.
NOTE 2: A mandatory advising stop will be placed on your record each semester when your cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.
NOTE 3: Students on probation can take a maximum of 12 hours in the College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences.
Once you have been placed on academic probation, meaning your overall cumulative GPA has fallen below 2.0, if your semester GPA falls below a 2.0, you will then be placed on academic suspension.
While on suspension at UH, a CLASS student may not enroll in classes as follows:
- First suspension: student must sit out the next full semester, either the Fall or the Spring.
- Second suspension: student must sit out 1 full year (12 months).
- Third suspension: student will not be readmitted to UH.
What can you do while on suspension?
- Meet with a member of the Academic Affairs Center or a departmental advisor.
- Decide on a strategy to avoid suspension in the future.
- Take classes at a community college or other University.
- Work on study and time management skills.
CLASS-READMISSION FROM ACADEMIC SUSPENSION
This option is for students that were suspended from a College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences major and are seeking readmission to a College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences major.
- Obtain and complete an application for readmission, available from the department of your major or the Academic Affairs Center, located in room 315, Agnes Arnold Hall.
- The student must have a one page typed statement explaining what contributed to their poor academic performance and how those factors have been resolved. What actions have been taken to ensure that the student will be more successful in school if readmitted?
- Students should first schedule an appointment with their major department advisor.
- Following advising and course selection, students should make an appointment in the CLASS Academic Affairs office located in rm. 315 Agnes Arnold Hall to process the readmission request.
- Have all documents complete and schedule an appointment by the deadline. (DO NOT BE LATE, NO EXCUSES. The CLASS Academic Affairs Center strictly enforces deadlines.)
NOTE: Readmission agreements with CLASS will include additional requirements including, but not limited to, mandatory meetings with Learning Support Services and midterm progress reports.
Deadlines for Readmission
- Spring Semester:
- Starts the last week in October.
- Ends during the last week before winter break.
- Fall Semester: (3 weeks before classes begin)
- Starts the last week in March.

Note: Readmission is neither automatic nor guaranteed and students should have all required documentation at the time of the meeting in CLASS Academic Affairs.
CLASS-UNDECLARED AGREEMENT
This option is for junior and senior students that are on probation and want to declare a major in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences but cannot due to their academic standing. CLASS UNDECLARED agreements are not processed until grades have posted for the current semester.
- Prior to the agreement, students should meet with their intended major department to be advised for the upcoming semester.
- Once grades have posted, if the student’s cumulative grade point average is still below 2.00 they should schedule an appointment in the CLASS Academic Affairs office located in rm. 315 Agnes Arnold Hall to request a CLASS UNDECLARED AGREEMENT.
NOTE 1: CLASS UNDECLARED AGREEMENTS require that 50% of each semester course load must be within the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
NOTE 2: See deadlines listed above for readmission as the same deadlines also apply for CLASS UNDECLARED AGREEMENTS.
CLASS-CONTRACT
This option is for students that are returning from academic suspension from a college other than the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences but intend to pursue a major in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.
- These students must first see the University Studies Division (USD) to begin the readmission process.
- After meeting with a USD Advisor, the student should schedule an appointment with the department of their intended major for advisement and course selection.
- Following department advising, the student should schedule an appointment in the CLASS Academic Affairs office located in Agnes Arnold Hall rm. 315.
