Background

IMB's Query By Image Content has been applied to five catalogues: "jaconde", "merimee", "memoire", "nadar", and "ibm". The format for each catalog is the same. Only the bank of images vary. There is not link to the IMB home page or any background information on the project available on this site.

Tips for Using Demonstrations

Help gives a full explanation of all the query features.
Queries can be based on color percentages/histogram, color layouts, texture, or URLs. The color histogram refers to the amount of each color. The position and not the amount of color matters when using color layout as a query.

Directions:
Image Similarity Search: Select method, click on an image. Leave keyword field blank.
Text Only Search: Type in keywords in the URL/keyword field. Then press Enter.
URL Only Search: Type in the URL or file name of an image and press Enter.
Text & Similarity: Enter keywords, select similarity measure, click on an image.
Click on Customized Search for custom query generation.

Evaluation of Demonstration

Does include repeats in the search results. It is hard to determine how well the search works within a catalog because the images are already grouped, the all look similar.
Merimee: old buildings, only 50 entries
Jaconde: classical paintings, only 50 entries Memoire: black and white photographs of buildings, 50 entries
Nadar: stereo-optical photos
IMB: more of a mix of images, however, still only 50 entries
