Vowel stems of the third declension. Vocabulary building
Many feminine ι stems of the third declension, based on verbal stems, denote the abstract concept of the verbal action. I list verbs, nouns, and English derivatives, when pertinent.
ἀποκρίνομαι = to answer; ἀπόκρισις, ἀποκρίσεως, ἡ = (an) answer
γι(γ)νώσκω = to know; γνῶσις, γνώσεως, ἡ = knowledge. Cf agnostic
ἐξίσταμαι = "to stand outside / beside oneself "; ἔκστασις, ἐκστάσεως, ἡ = ecstasy
ζητέω > ῶ = to seek; ζήτησις, ζητήσεως, ἡ = search
κινέω > ῶ = to move; κίνησις, κινήσεως, ἡ = movement. Cf cinema
κρίνω = to separate, pick out, decide; κρίσις, κρίσεως, ἡ = a judgment, decision. Cf crisis
πίνω = to drink
πιστεύω = to trust; πίστις, πίστεως, ἡ = faith.
There are few nouns with υ stems, but one is important enough to remember:
πρέσβυς, πρέσβεως, ὁ = elder, ambassador. Cf Presbyterian
In contrast to the above, the term for "fish," ἰχθύς, ἰχθύος, ὁ, is regular. The early Christians who met in the Roman Catacombs drew the figure of a fish on the walls. It became a symbol for their religion because of the following acronym:

ἀσθενής, ἀσθενές = weak, sick
ἀστήρ, ἀστέρος, ὁ = star
ἄστυ, ἄστεως, τό = citadel, city vs. countryside
ἀψευδής, ές = trustworthy
βασιλεῦσι(ν) = dat pl of the word meaning "king," to be studied in lesson 16
δεικνύω [δείκνυμι], δείξω, ἔδειξα = to show, point out
διατελέω > ῶ = to fulfil, continue (doing)
δίστομος, ον = with two mouths, double-edged
ἐκπορεύομαι, ἐκπορεύσομαι = to come out
[ἐπι-δείκνυμι], cf δεικνύω [δείκνυμι]
ἐπι-πλήσσω, ἐπι-πλήξω = to strike at, rebuke
ἐρωτώμενα, τά = "the things asked" = the question/s (cf. ἐρωτάω > ῶ)
ἔριον, ου, τό = wool
ἔσχατος, η, ον = last
ζάω > ζῶ, ζήσομαι, ἔζησα = live, breathe. This verb makes contractions in η rather than in long ᾱ : ζῶ, ζῇς, ζῇ, etc.
θεάομαι, θεάσομαι, ἐθεασάμην = to view, behold
θλίψις, -εως, ἡ = affliction, oppression
θρίξ, τριχός, ἡ = hair. Cf. trichology.
ἰχθύς, ιχθύος, ὁ = fish
καλέω > καλῶ, καfont-family: Palatino Linotype"> κάμινος, ου, ἡ = furnace, kiln
κατ-έρχομαι = to go or come down
κλείς, κλειδός, ἡ = key
κυριακός, ή, όν = of the Lord. Cf. κύριος
κώμη, ης, ἡ = village, small town
λαός, λαοῦ, ὁ = people, populace
λευκός. ή, όν = white. Cf. leucocyt
λυχνία, ας, ἡ = lampstand
μαστός, οῦ, ὁ = a female's breast, the chest. Cf. mastectomy.
μηδέ = and not; but not; not even; μηδέ ... μηδέ = neither... nor
μῆλον, ου, τό = apple or any tree-fruit
μυστήριον, ου, τό = mystery
ναῦς, νεώς, ἡ = ship
νεκρός, ά, όν = dead. Cf necromancy
Νερέα = acc sg of Νερεύς, Νερέως, ὁ = Nereus, a god of the sea in Greek mythology
νήπιος, α, ον = (literally "non speaking," cf. ἔπος), thence childlike, innocent
νημηρτής, νημηρτές = unfailing
οἰκουμένη, ης, ἡ = the inhabited earth (cf. γῆ, γῆς, ἡ = earth) , the world
οἰωνός, οῦ, ὁ = bird, omen
ὅμοιος, α, ον = equal (to someone or something in the dative). Cf. homo-
ὀξύς, ὀξεία, ὀξύ = sharp
ὀπίσω (+ gen) = behind
πίστις, πίστεως, ἡ = faith
πλεῖστος, η, ον = very great (neuter: very much), (pl: very many), most (superlative of πολύς)

Πόντος, ου, ὁ = Pontos, a god of the sea in Greek mythology, father of Nereus
