Creative Writing Prizes
- The Sylvan Karchmer Prize in Fiction ($100 award)
- The Howard Moss Prize in Poetry ($100 award)
- The Brian Lawrence Prize in Fiction ($100 award)
- The Brian Lawrence Prize in Poetry ($100 award)
- The Brian Lawrence Prize in Nonfiction, ($100 award)

Submission Requirements
- All manuscripts must be typed or computer printed. Fiction and nonfiction manuscripts must be double-spaced, using 12 point font.
- Students can submit manuscripts in all three genres (fiction, poetry, and nonfiction). No manuscript can win more than one prize. Students can win in more than one genre.
- Fiction and nonfiction manuscripts should not exceed 20 double-spaced pages. Manuscripts may contain either a single story or essay or 2 shorter pieces.
- Poetry manuscripts may contain up to 5 poems.
- Include a cover sheet containing the student’s name, student number, address, phone number, and email address. The student’s name should appear only on the cover sheet. The last 4 digits of the student number should appear on all pages of the manuscript.
Jimmie Katherine Morris Gentile Scholarship in Literary Criticism
Two scholarships of up to $1,000 each.
Eligibility Requirements
English majors who have completed at least 9 hours of upper division English courses (with a minimum of 6 upper division hours on this campus), have a 3.25 GPA in English, and will be enrolled for the 2009-2010 academic year are eligible for this scholarship.
Submission Requirements:
- A clean, unmarked copy of a critical essay (any length) submitted to complete requirements for an upper division English course taken at UH.
- A 500-word personal statement from the applicant explaining how the submitted essay reflects his/her interest in English studies.
- A complete academic transcript
- A letter of recommendation submitted directly to Dr. Houston from a member of the UH English Department faculty.
- Include a cover sheet containing the student’s name, student number, address, phone number, and email address. The student’s name should appear only on the cover sheet. The last 4 digits of the student number should appear on all pages of the writing sample.
