Composition

The English Department offers composition courses that fulfill the university's Core communication requirements. This page provides information on prerequisites for placement in different composition courses, as well as how to earn Advanced Placement credit.

Composition Courses

ENGL 1300: Basic Writing

Work in the development of basic expository writing skills.

ENGL 1303: Freshman Composition I

A detailed study of the principles of rhetoric as applied in reading and writing expository essays.

ENGL 1304: Freshman Composition II

A detailed study of the principles of rhetoric as applied to analyzing and writing argumentative and persuasive essays; principles and methods of research, culminating in writing a substantial research paper.

ENGL 1309: English Composition for Nonnative Speakers I

Rhetoric and composition; practice in reading and writing expository essays.

ENGL 1310: English Composition for Nonnative Speakers II

Rhetoric and composition; practice in reading and writing argumentative and research essays.

ENGL 1370: Freshman Composition II — Honors

Principles of rhetoric as applied to writing persuasive essays; principles and methods of research.

Prerequisites

By earning at least one of the following scores, the student satisfies the prerequisites for enrollment in ENGL1303: Freshman Composition. If the student does not meet the prerequisites for enrollment in ENGL1303 then student should enroll in ENGL1300. (Non-native speakers of English should register for ENGL1309: English Composition for Nonnative Speakers I).

The prerequisite for enrollment in sophomore level English courses is completion of ENGL1303 and 1304 or their equivalents.

Advancement Placement Credit

ENGL 1303

By earning at least one of the following scores, the student earns 3 hours credit for ENGL1303.

ENGL 1304

By earning at least one of the following scores, the student earns 3 hours credit for ENGL 1304.
