Shaping the future of danceChoreographers will continue to shape the future of the ancient and fundamental form of human creativity called dance. As we enter the 21st Century, the University of Houston, located in the fourth largest city in the country, is in a prime position to attract national attention to the questions of how to make a dance, what is the essence of choreography, and how does one teach the discipline of dance making. The Center for Choreography in the School of Theatre provides an environment for vital creative explorations by guest artists and educators focusing on dance composition. Students experience a variety of national and international viewpoints that combine the latest compositional trends with more standard techniques. The result is not only a unique experience for the students, but the production of exciting public performances, panels, and exchanges among students, dance faculty, visitors, and the larger Houston community. In essence, the Center creates a living archive for dance making. The School of Theatre, which has an enviable position of hosting such notables as Edward Albee, Sir Peter Hall, Stuart Ostrow, and the late Jose Quintero as part of its regular faculty, is perfectly situated to provide a home for visiting choreographers and dance educators of the caliber of these great artists. The Center for Choreography will move forward with the traditions of yesterday and with the innovations of today, not reinventing the wheel, but putting wings on it. |
